Dragons, Dragons, and maybe also some non-fiction
Updates on KimBoo's writing - take that, SEO!!!!
More than one friend has recently taken me to task for not talking about my writing projects in public. By “more than one” I mean all of them. Everyone is on my case! I am victimized by people who only want the best for me! WOE!
…or maybe it’s time I get over my insecurities and start talking about my writing projects in public. *grumbles*
If you’ve read my essay about being on brand, you know that my transition to being an author who is not constantly trying to conform to some precise marketing persona is hard for me. Very ironic, given my general iconoclastic attitude, but hey it’s late stage capitalism, folks. You know how it is.
Fair warning: I am one of those authors who always has three or more works in progress. I am a pantser so I use lulls in a story’s development to work on other stories. It means my output is a bit uneven, even if consistent. It also means that I always have a lot of stories in progress at the same time. This makes me as happy as a pig in wallow!
Currently posting:
The Queen’s Aerie, a fantasy novel with a MMF polyamorous thruple and dragon shifters. What more do you want??!??! I am serializing it with early access chapters on my House of York ream page, but free chapters are slowly being added here on substack, Wattpad, and RoyalRoad.
Starting soon:
Dragon’s Grail: Escape from Ice Mountain. If you’ve followed me for a while, you recognize the title. I pulled that failure of a YA book down and re-wrote it with a protag who is a 45 year old grumpy librarian who is forced out of her magical library into the big wild world where she just does not want to be. Second world fantasy serial with a MMF romance subplot, and also, dragons (do you sense a theme?). It will be an ongoing serial, and I expect it to run for several years. You have been warned! Launching in July.
In progress:
My non-fiction book for authors on serial beats for long-running stories is available for pre-order! Become an Unstoppable Storyteller was born out of a webinar I gave in May in conjunction with the Subscriptions for Authors podcast (free to watch!) to teach people how to use the serial beats spreadsheet I created. Breaking things down and explaining how they work is my superpower, and this is such a fascinating topic. If you are curious about what sets a serial apart from a serialized novel, you want in on this action!
I’ll be posting some essays here about the topic as well.
Future plans:
I have a portal/transmigration fantasy story with the terrible working title Transmigrated Teri about an elderly, bitter old office lady (you know the type) who is a huge fan of a fantasy novel series and ends up getting thrown into the body of one of the most loathed minor characters, who also happens to be killed off in an excruciating way early in the series. Knowing her fate, Teri has to figure out how to save her life while also not derailing the whole plot, since after all, the Chosen One is her step-son! I’m super looking forward to writing this, and now that Queen’s Aerie is done and I have a good head start on Dragon’s Grail, I’ll probably start it soon.
I have a couple of books under my MM romance brand, Cooper West, that I will be working on during the last half of this year as well:
Rebound: The next big story in the Guardsmen’verse series! Following right on the heels of Parker’s Sanctuary, it is about a Brett Bakemann, a young vet tech in Thomasville, Georgia who has a big secret! A series of horrible murders puts him in the middle of events he’d rather stay out of, but the Institute has long arms and the killer might just have Brett on their hit list.
Rough Trade: Oooof, this story. It started as a short story in an anthology my former publisher put out, and to be brutally honest, it sucked. I am just not a good short story writer and I have since learned to own that fact. When I got the rights back, I decided to make it a novel, but the ideas quickly spiraled out of control. In retrospect I realize that it is a story destined to be a true serial, but as much as I love the premise I have not touched this story in 5+ years. A few chapters are up on Wattpad if you are curious; it’s a science fiction space opera in homage to James White’s Sector General series and CJ Cherryh’s Company Wars of the Alliance-Union universe, only queer. :D
And that’s it!
… which is a lie, I have three other stories bubbling on the back burner, including the long awaited zombie apocalypse series, End Times Country Buffet, and the second-world diesel-punk fantasy cozy mystery, Bones & Brews.
No really, that’s it!
(OR IS IT?)
You are busy! How exciting to have so many diverse projects going at once.
