I apologize for the confusion, I should have made it clear that I was talking specifically about the United States. In the early 1900s the USA had over 20 million horses; today estimates run between six and ten million. So yes, a fraction of the number of horses that there used to be.

Also, we have almost no way of knowing what the worldwide population of horses was in the early 1900, as countries/regions that used horses extensively (Russia, for instance) did not keep accurate census of livestock. It could very well be that worldwide back then the horse population was well over 100 million, we just don't know.

In any case, the point I was making was not about an exact number of horses then or now, but that modern society's reliance on horses disappeared, which is inarguable.
