Yes, Really

About a week ago I came down with something that was maybe norovirus or something like it. I didn’t get a fever or body aches just, uh, intestinal upset. The intestines, they were displeased and let me know it! Knocked me out for a day or so and I thought I was on the mend.

And then the coughing started.

The past four days have been me fighting with my respiratory system about breathing. Ughhhhhh. I’m feeling better and coughing less, at least, and hope this is the upswing. If I have to go to urgent care again I will be cussing the whole way.

What is sleep?

I guess when you decide to start a whole business venture (Serial Nation!) while working part time for your alma mater’s independent alumni organization (Novo Collegian Alliance!) while also updating backlist books to republish (so many books!) while also writing new fiction (Dragon’s Grail!) while also staying fed, hydrated, and rested is…uhm, a lot? Yikes.

Oh yeah, it’s LIVE! I’ve created it to be THE best place to learn about the craft and business of serials, serialization, and the subscription model.

There are plenty of wonderful teachers who are out there talking about serializing on substack, and I don’t mean to take anything from their expertise, but I cast a wider net. Is substack best for you? What about Ream and Wattpad and Kindle Vella…oh, right, that last one folded. What does that mean? Are opportunities growing or reducing? Greetings from the Frigid Tundra

By which I mean, North Florida. It’s noon and the temp is just 35°F, which isn’t terrible but only if you are a polar bear. We even got snow flurries!

I mean, last year we got actual piles of snow, which was surreal:

There seems to be a trend these days of GenX getting their nostalgia on. We’re an odd-one-out generation, usually forgotten and often maligned. And now, we’re also old.

Like most generations, we’ve got the good (alt rock) and the bad (preppies/yuppies), and we were the last generation who genuinely believed in the “American Dream,” even if we mocked the status quo of it all with cynicism that was liquored up and lacquered down. Oooof, did we learn the hard way.

But damn, we were good at zines! Bitch Rag defined the club scene of Orlando at the time, and was only the top tier of a slew of zines that appeared, floated around, and disappeared.

AND WE’RE BACK! A friend sent me a link to a new print-only GenX zine, GEEZER. Immagonna sign up. Maybe send them an actual paper check, for the vibes.

What Up?

For the past two weeks I’ve been house sitting for a couple of friends who went to London for the holidays. Their home is in a rural area of northern Florida, and while it’s not too remote (there is a Publix just a few miles away, thank goodness!), it feels like it at night without the usual light and sound pollution I’m used to in Tallahassee. That was definitely an adjustment!

I often do a year-end “retreat” where I pull back from engagement across all channels, including IRL, to meditate and rest and do some self reflection. Since I was going to be here anyway, I decided my retreat would be in the woods this year! I have to admit I did not quite get in as much meditation and yoga as I planned, but I took a lot of naps and sat around drinking coffee in the morning on the porch, watching the woods come alive as the sun rose. Win/Win!

Here is a bit of old Florida I captured on a walk down one of the dirt backroads around here. Yes, this is what December is like for us, although it was a frigid 55°F!!!!

What Now?

As I discussed in my previous post, Scary Questions and Big Plans, I’ve been wrestling with and juggling a lot of ideas for 2026. The planning continues, big and small, although my goal is very simple: financial stability. I know, I know, “simple but not easy.”

My friend and I have been working on a “Creative Compass” worksheet she came up with (I hope to convince her to share it with y’all!) and the hardest part for me was, ironically, the quarterly planning. As a former project manager it is so ironic that when it comes to my own plans, I tend to overload unrealistically.

There is just SO MUCH I want to do!

But I need firmer foundations in place. So, I’m working on that.

Hello from Bed Rest

Welp. Yeah, it got worse before it got better.

TL;DR: Weak lungs, bad travel experience, pushed too hard, full collapse.

The deets: It’s all because I got whooping cough in 2012.

That ruined my respiratory system in ways I truly did not understand at the time. As I get older, the impact is more pronounced, and I’m having to come to terms with the fact that my dreams of being an Olympic athlete are truly over.

Ha! As if. I’ve never been athletic or competitive so eh, not much of a loss. But yes, the damage is real. When I got sick on the 8th during the overnight stay at ATL, I really thought it was just a minor upset and like a fool pushed myself too hard the following few days on my return.

I paid for it.

By Friday I was scared of pneumonia, so borrowed a friend’s car and went to urgent care. Pneumonia avoided, but I’ve been on prescription, choke-a-goat cough syrup, steroids, antibiotics, and albuterol (ugh) since. Honestly the days have been a blur.

Which is to say, there is not much to report on this update other than SHE LIVES.

If I owe you an email or smth, hopefully you’ll hear from me before Thanksgiving. I’ll try! Now my timer is up, and I have to toddle back to bed. Wheeeeeeee.

So many people had so many questions that at least a third of the presentation was spent answering those questions. I’m thinking about doing an online class/workshop on serials as there seems to be a need! But in the meantime, this is a post from wayyyyy back in 2023 when I was just starting this journey.

It was A LOT

Oh gosh, it was…A LOT. So much. Networking, presentations, panels, and more filled up every day I was there. A lot of folk would go to dinner shows or other tourist-y things but by 7pm I’d be wiped out, crawling into my bed with some melatonin after turning on my humidifier.

Why humidifier? Because the event was in Las Vegas! I drank a lot of water and soaked in the shower quite a bit, and put lotion on my face. Bizarre. Also, did you know that in low-humidity areas, you actually get dry when you step out of the shower?!?!??!??? WILD! And the bath towels would dry out overnight!!! What is this magic????

The big topics were, unsurprisingly, A.I., audio, kickstarter, and translations. Also, using A.I. to create audio books and translations and kickstarter campaigns. I cannot stress enough how embedded A.I. was in every discussion I had there. A few authors were opposed to it, but on the whole, the overwhelming majority admit that they use it in some capacity. That said, the majority I talked to do not use it for creative writing, mostly for brainstorming, marketing copy, business planning, and social media campaigns.

Which brings me to what I consider the main theme of the event: Lean into being Human. We all see the way A.I. is being leveraged by the corporate overlords against us across every metric, and many bigger brains than mine were stressing how the next 18 months will see a transition in the publishing industry not seen since…ever, probably, but for sure not since KDP broke (virtual) ground on self-publishing in 2007.

It’s given me a lot to think about regarding my own approach to social media, including this blog and especially my podcast. Not just about “what works?” but “what is sustainable for me?” I’ve burnt myself out before trying to chase trends or do the popular thing, so I need to be careful of where I want to take this writing lark in the age of A.I.

More later, when I’ve recovered from the trip! And yes, my return was marked by sleeping overnight in Terminal T at the Atlanta airport due to 1) bad weather causing me to miss my connection; 2) all the cancelled flights, e.g.:

Nature’s Drama Queen

This is fantasically crappy photo taken with my phone camera of a section of the Grand Canyon from about 30,000 ft. (9,100 meters). We were coming in at sunset and it took my breath away. I was reminded how much I love texture in my landscapes: mountains, valleys, canyons, arroyos. I don’t hate Florida the way some people do, but despite living here most of my life, it’s never appealed to me or felt like “home”. No, give me the full drama queen landscape! Oh, someday I will move into a cabin on a mountain in the woods. Someday!

Packing and Printing and Panic, oh my!

Tomorrow (Sat. Nov. 1st) I get on the plane for the AuthorNation 2025 writer's conference! My flight is Tallahassee Atlanta Las Vegas, and while I’m not looking forward to the plane’s canned air, I am getting excited about the event.

I’m printing out stickers to put purchase codes on books, designing cards to represent books I won’t have with me (thanks for screwing that up, Amazon!), double checking that my websites are up to date, and practicing my presentation!

…oh, and also packing. (NTS: check the weather in Vegas!)

• Dragon’s Grail Arc 3: The Dukes of Odwego has launched on The Bibliotheca! The first chapter, Adrift on the River, returns with Astra and her companions Traz and Xavai floating down the Hoshikwazu with no destination and no plan! Exciting times! Traz’s condition is worsening, their raft is not fit for traversing such a big waterway, and exceptionally bad luck continues to haunt them! The story will be updated every week on Thursdays.

• CAN HAZ PODCAST! I’m back to regularly updating my podcast, The Author Alchemist. I’ve shifted the focus from straight craft advice to being a bit more down-to-earth discussions of mindset and productivity. I hope to get on a weekly posting schedule, but in the meantime, I’ll be sharing short vids from my travels!

• A Plea for Author’s Notes: If you missed it earlier this month, this blog post is all about the joy of writing—and reading!—author’s notes. In the digital world, where space is endless, we have the opportunity to talk about our stories with our readers in ways we never have before!

This one isn’t very old, it’s from March, but really hits right now as I pack for AuthorNation 2025.

Why? Because the only reason I’m presenting at this popular and well-respected indie author conference is because in spring of 2023 I spent two fevered months writing and publishing a book on how to write serials, which was based on a spur-of-the-moment webinar I was asked to take part in. Nothing about that was planned or on my agenda, and I certainly never expected that to bloom into my appearing on numerous podcasts and eventually being invited to give this presentation! I wrote the book and marketed it with no idea of what it would lead to, only that I needed to keep going.

Most all of Tallahassee knows about Tallahassee Nurseries, the premier gardening center of the whole region. It’s a sprawling indoor/outdoor complex that is fun just to walk around and see all the amazing plants. I’m not a gardener even a little bit, but visiting there always makes me wish I was! Anyway, they often do the holidays right with their decorations, and this year was no exception!

Leaving on a Jet Plane!

I have been very wrapped up in getting ready for the AuthorNation 2025 writer's conference, which starts on November 3rd. The big news (if you have not heard me screaming about it already) is that I am presenting there this year!

My presentation is “ Unstoppable Storytelling: Crafting Epic Long-Running Serials” and is based on my book Become an Unstoppable Storyteller. I will be in the “Bronze 3” room on Thursday, November 6, at 9:00 AM! …I know, an unenviable slot, but hey, ya gots to pay yer dues.

So, I’m practicing my presentation and figuring out what to pack and panicking over not having any books to sell on Friday during ReaderNation (thanks, ‘zon!) and generally trying not to be anxious.

Spoiler: I’m 1000% riddled with anxiety!

But that has less to do with the presentation—I’m comfortable with public speaking, and actually enjoy it—than with the traveling. I have not gone a long-distance trip in about 12 years or so, and certainly not one where I will be there for a whole damn week!!!

Spoopy season!

I live in “Midtown” in Tallahassee, which is about two miles north of downtown. It’s littered with older subdivisions and old-school “residential streets” where people really get into the spirit of Halloween. It’s a delight to walk around and see what people are doing every year. This “speed trap skeleton” went up along 7th Avenue and I just had to share!

(And yes, that is pretty much how “autumn” hits in Florida: green, mossy, and damp.)

Fall, the busiest season?

Well September is nearly over now, and I’m perplexed as to how that happened. Wasn’t it April just last week? What the heck.

I’ve got SO much to do!

The AuthorNation 2025 event is looming, and I have to submit my slide deck for my presentation next week. It is nearly done, but I’m still gonna stress about it, and you can’t stop me! I love giving presentations, and this will be a fun one, but slide decks are such a pain in the ass. Meanwhile, I still need to buy plane tix, something I have not done in literally decades. Didn’t AAA used to handle all of this? *cries into coffee*

My secret penname project continues, and Dragon’s Grail #2 has wrapped. My next goal is to get Dragon’s Grail book one and two published as books, and line up the schedule for posting #3 (The Dukes of Odwedo) on Bibliotheca.

Yes, Transmigrated Teri is on hiaitus for a bit, but it should be fired up again before the end of the year. I hope!

Personal Projects Management (PPM)

I don’t talk about it enough, but I designed a project management method for individuals and solopreneurs. It can be used with apps or paper planners, and is meant to be both flexible and comprehensive. It uses basic project management principles to help you get on top of everything you need and/or want to do!

I’m talking about it now because as we head into the 4th quarter of 2025, I’m redoing my own PPM system. It’s a lot! But necessary. I’ve got so many amazing things planned for the rest of this year and 2026! …too many? Probably. But that’s what PPM was designed for!

Walking Alone

I walked Keely every single day, twice a day, for 9 years. Rolling out of bed to go for a walk is now baked into my psyche, so instead of fighting it, I decided to just keep going.

I don’t have Keely pacing me, so I started challenging myself with duration and speed, and now I walk three miles almost every morning! What most people don’t know is that North Florida, especially Tallahassee, is rather hilly. I mean, for Florida! These are not steep foothills or anything! But hills there be, and here is one of them, caught when I got out late one morning so was there to watch the sunrise:

The Post-Keely Era

It has been over a month since Keely departed, and overall I’m doing okay. The first two weeks post-Keely were spent in a stunned state of grief, punctuated with a lot of sleeping. The stress of caretaking Keely for the first half of this year was a lot heavier than I admitted, but don’t worry, it caught up with me! Sooooo much sleeping!

But life goes on, and so do I. I have archived the “Keely’s Way” section of this newsletter, and started a new one to serve as my updatery: The York Hoard.

Despite it all, I’ve stayed busy, believe it or not!

• House of York redesign: I’ll write more about this in a separate post, but I’ve restructured my business model a bit to make HoY my production company, with all my projects under its umbrella. It’s meant redesigning the site and all my other sites and…ugh, it’s been a project and a half. But I’m making progress!

• Out From Fanfiction: Transforming Creative Freedom: This was published back in May but fell off the radar due to *waves hands around*. I wrote it to help all the great fanfic writers I know who are intimidated and/or frustrated trying to write their own original fiction. I know it’s a niche interest, but this one wasn’t written for the money (just like fanfic!).

Keely, the Last Word

I just never want to let her go, but she’s already gone and it breaks my heart anew every morning. My good friend Lydia suggested setting up an altar for her, so I did, and that seemed to ease my soul a little.

Then my bestie surprised me on my birthday with something she had been sitting on for months: a beautiful, hand-drawn portrait of Keely she had commissioned earlier this year. I admit, I cried like a baby when I opened it. Now, it is framed and sits in a place of pride in the living room. Thanks so much to Portraits by Diane, she did an amazing job capturing Keely’s vivacious spirit!
